Streaming Media Policies
As part of the IRC's mission to support emerging technology and provide
support for faculty and staff, we offer streaming media services as a
way of delivering your message across the Internet via video and audio
transmission.
The university has a streaming media server that hosts all media (video
and audio) files. GMU departments, faculty and staff can set up an account
to use the server as storage for a minimal fee. This service is not available
to students.
To get started using the streaming media services, review the policies
below and either attend a workshop or fill out the streaming media project
form.
Accessing Resources
- use the Streaming Media Project form to submit projects for consideration
- faculty and staff should submit major proposed streaming projects
at least two weeks prior to use of production facilities
- reserve stations in the IRC with 48 hour notice (call 993-3141)
- enjoy Lab Assistant support unless lab is overly busy
- walkins are welcome, but schedule student support and station availability
requires prior reservation
- customers may access some training materials online, and may also
access learning resources in the Media Resource Center (229 JC)
- questions and issues beyond the technical expertise of the available
IRC staff may be referred to other units such as GMU-TV and/or the Mason
Media Lab
Supported Technology
- the IRC supports both Apple (Final Cut Pro HD) and PC (Premiere Elements
& Premiere Pro)
- the ITU supports a Windows Media Streaming Server, which requires
Windows Media Player 9 on the user side
- Streaming Media Server is available on a subscription basis (units
pay a fee based on storage and bandwidth)
- the IRC uses Windows Media Encoder series 9 (currently using an Osprey
capture technology on the PC side) to convert and compress files for
streaming
Generating Raw Materials
- digital files are often VERY large; individuals should plan on bringing
storage media since IRC work stations are cleaned regularly (firewire
harddrives, portable USB flash drives, or blank DVD disks are among
the available options)
- cameras and scanners are available for use by faculty and staff, but
taping of lectures is a fee-for-service provided by STAR*Services; some
in-studio taping of lectures is supported by special arrangements with
GMU-TV
- copyrighted materials must be cleared through the University Copyright
Officer (Rosemary Chase, 3-2544) - documented permission to use copyrighted
material should be presented as part of your application - see form
- media conversion technologies (VHS and mini-DV to streaming file,
etc.) as well as direct firewire connections are available in the IRC
lab; student support of conversion projects is a fee-based service of
STAR*Services (229 JC)
- we do not support conversion from a DVD disk to a streaming file
Production Support
- projects in need of production services may be referred to the STAR*Services
or Mason Media Lab for fee-based services
- the IRC is NOT a production facility and faculty (and unit support
resources) are responsible for all aspects involved in pre- and post-production
of streaming projects
- the IRC is not responsible for developing or providing student production
support; this should be the responsibility of the faculty member's unit
The Instructional Resource Center reserves the right to recognize resource
limitations and decline support for projects beyond our means. The IRC
can offer only limited technical support on some issues and may refer
individuals to Apple, Microsoft, or other external vendors where appropriate.
